Japanese investment company Metaplanet has approved a plan to raise 180.3 billion yen, approximately $1.2 billion, through an overseas share issuance. The majority of the funds, around $835 million, are earmarked for purchasing additional Bitcoin to bolster its treasury reserves.
The company intends to issue up to 555 million new shares, potentially increasing its outstanding stock from 722 million to about 1.27 billion shares. The pricing for this issuance will be set between September 9 and 11, with payments to be settled soon after.
Metaplanet currently holds about 18,991 BTC, valued at around $2.1 billion. This strategic move is aimed at mitigating the risks associated with Japan’s weakening yen and inflation, while enhancing the overall corporate value through Bitcoin accumulation.
In addition to the Bitcoin purchases, the firm plans to allocate $45 million to its ongoing Bitcoin Income Business. This initiative generates profits by selling covered call options on its Bitcoin holdings, and the company plans to expand this profitable segment using the new funds.
This share offering targets institutional investors internationally and will not be registered under the US Securities Act of 1933, hence it won’t be publicly offered in the United States.
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich commented on the offering via social media, highlighting legal constraints around public comments during the process. This funding round reflects Metaplanet’s aggressive and long-term focus on growing its Bitcoin assets, aiming to hold over 210,000 BTC by 2027, which represents more than 1% of the total Bitcoin supply.
Furthermore, Metaplanet has been upgraded to a mid-cap stock in FTSE Russell’s September 2025 Semi-Annual Review, gaining inclusion in the FTSE Japan Index. This follows strong quarterly performance and will also add the company to the FTSE All-World Index, placing it alongside major global market players.
