Rishi Sunak Rejoins Goldman Sachs as Senior Advisor Following UK Premiership

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has officially returned to Goldman Sachs, taking on the role of Senior Advisor, the global investment bank announced on July 8, 2025. This marks Sunak’s first significant professional engagement since stepping down as Prime Minister in July 2024, after the Conservative Party’s electoral defeat ended their 14-year governance.

Sunak’s new position involves collaborating with senior leaders across Goldman Sachs to provide strategic advice to clients worldwide on critical issues, particularly offering his distinctive insights into the macroeconomic and geopolitical environment. Additionally, he will engage with the firm’s global workforce to foster a culture of continuous learning and development.

This appointment is a homecoming for Sunak, who began his career at Goldman Sachs as a summer intern in 2000 and subsequently worked as an analyst from 2001 to 2004. Before his political ascent, he co-founded an investment firm and held various roles in finance.

During his political career, Sunak served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 before becoming Prime Minister from October 2022 until July 2024. He remains the Conservative Member of Parliament for Richmond and Northallerton.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon expressed enthusiasm about Sunak’s return, emphasizing the value of his unique perspectives and experience in advising the bank’s clients amid complex global challenges.

Notably, Sunak’s earnings from Goldman Sachs will be donated to his charity, The Richmond Project, which focuses on improving numeracy skills.

Regulatory guidelines restrict Sunak from lobbying the government or using ministerial contacts for a year, and he is also barred from advising on matters related to foreign governments or sovereign wealth funds during this period.

Sunak’s move reflects a broader trend of former senior government officials transitioning into influential roles within the financial sector, leveraging their policy expertise and networks to navigate an increasingly intricate geopolitical landscape.
